Alma Mater Society Rodent Control Project
Westside Pest Control rodent control team helps this UBC facility to eliminate the growing population of rodents.
Planned and built over 7 years and completed in 2015, The Nest is the new student union building run by the Alma Mater Society on UBC Campus. It is a student-centered hub of activity, providing a welcome space for all students to eat, shop, study, and socialize while leading the way in sustainability practices and goals.
Challenge
Food establishments are a perfect environment for rats and other rodents to thrive. If you are dealing with the preparation, serving, or storage of food, you are likely to experience rodent issues at some point. Garbage areas are a haven for rats, and if not clean and regularly cleared, they will attract more to the area.
Increased Rodents Activity:
At UBC Alma Mater, they experienced an increase of rodent activity that was causing headaches for management, food vendors, and staff. The issue was quickly getting worse and management sought expert advice to eradicate the issue. Entry ways in a buildings structure, through gaps, cracks, or under roof tiles provide easy access for rodents and these needed to be sealed off.
Heath & Safety:
Working in the food service industry, having a pest management program is essential. Any facility in the production, packaging or preparation of foods must meet the strict food safety standards, or risk closure if issues are discovered by a health inspector.
Solution
As of September 2018, Westside Pest Control has been contracted to provide pest management and prevention services for all of the food vendors in The Nest. Included within the building are ten (10) food vendors and two (2) catering kitchens. The solution included weekly service calls, setting trapping, installing rodent exclusion methods, as well advising on best practise for food storage and waste management.
Westside Pest Control has effectively dealt with increased rodent issues within the building, as well as insect control during hot summer months and recurring issues with drain flies and fruit flies in food manufacturing settings.
