Rodent exclusion in Fairview

At this home in the Fairview neighbourhood of Vancouver, the Westside Rat control team were called upon to put a stop to the activity of rodents inside of the building. The homeowners were fed up, and rightfully so. It’s their own home and they deserve some peace and quiet!

Solution

First step, we investigate the outside by performing a complete exterior inspection to find the access points used by rodents to enter the property. There are many classic entryways like gaps in siding, around plumbing & gas lines, near roof tiles, and soffit vents etc.

This access point you see here is quite large actually. It is common to have a gap in between the siding and the foundations like this. Most of the time these entryways are much smaller, hidden, and harder to find. We are looking for gaps the size of a quarter (24mm) for rats and squirrels, and about ¼ inch (6-7mm) for mice.

The solution was to apply metal flashing to cover the entrance, thus preventing sneaky critters from getting back in.

Additionally we found gaps in around the pipes leading into the basement suite. (image 4)

The exclusion applied here was galvanised wire mesh, cut to size and fixed about the pipe.
