Lore Krill Housing – Bird Project
Westside Pest Control bird control team installs bird netting and bird spike solutions at Lore Krill Co-op housing to fend-off pest birds and protect the building exterior from bird damage.
Background
Lore Krill Housing Co-operative is a non-profit residence offering apartments for rent in Vancouver, BC. Opened in 2002, they offer co-op apartment opportunities at two locations; 65 West Cordova and 230 East Georgia. Together they have over 200 apartments for rent.
Challenge
Pest Birds can cause serious damage to the exterior of buildings. For Lore Krill Housing, keeping the building looking clean and aesthetically pleasing is paramount. It’s important for residents and potential new residents looking to join the community.
The challenge for Lore Krill was the architectural layout of the structure lent its hand to pest birds like Pigeons, Seagulls and Crows to roost on balconies and exterior beans. When they find a comfortable environment, they make themselves at home and pooping wherever they feel like it.
Bird droppings are acidic and if not cleaned up can contribute to deterioration of your property. Once distributed, these droppings turn to a salt and ammonia solution, and with some rain creates a chemical reaction to speed up the rusting process. Reducing damage to paint, concrete, and metal is an important part of property maintenance.
For Lore Krill, the entire north end of the structure is heavily affected by pigeon droppings. Pigeons have nested on the rooftop and sit along the north facing balconies, causing issues outlined above. Many units are heavily soiled and require removal of damaged items as well as deep cleaning to remove contaminants.
Solution
The Westside Pest Control bird control team met with the manager of Lore Krill and created a unique plan that would deter birds from landing on the building. This solution included installing Bird Netting and Bird Spike on the buildings exterior.
The Bird Spike is used to prevent roosting on ledges. One benefit of using the Bird spike Westside Provide used is made of 100% stainless steel ensuring durability and also includes a 15 year guarantee.
All window ledges needed to be spiked as the issue wasn’t just focused on the balconies; this was completed through rope access.
The balconies themselves were having issues with nesting in some cases. For each unit a thorough cleaning/power washing was completed prior to any hardware installation. Our technicians firstly work to design the netting installation that fits with each unique unit. Special attention was needed to upper units without an overhang to anchor against. 7ft stainless steel poles were fabricated in these cases to allow enough headroom on the balcony post net installation.
Bird netting was then used in conjunction with wiring and anchoring to close off the balconies from any pests while also allowing the tenants to utilize the balcony space as normal.
