Burnaby Yard Works – Bird Project
Westside Pest Control bird control team installs over 14,000 square feet of bird netting for the new Burnaby Works Yard to help protect machinery and product from bird damage. A complex installation that included fastening bird netting to the metal cables using boom lifts and scissor lifts, as well as framing wood supports along the two sides to attach the netting. Pretty neat solution all round!
Background
Laurel Street Burnaby Yard Works is an ongoing project by the City of Burnaby to replace the aging works yard facility at 5780 Laurel Street. Laurel Street Works Yard has been at this location since 1954 and has reached the end of its useful life. Construction of the Operations Building (initially referred to as the Main Building) began in 2020.
Part of the redevelopment plans required new warehousing and storage spaces for essential equipment and machinery, in three specific areas;
- Central stores (warehousing for stock materials and parts);
- Welding, paint and carpentry shops;
- Fleet storage and repairs;
Challenge
Open warehousing environments provide potential risk of pest birds. Pigeons and Seagulls on the hunt for shelter see these facilities as perfect places to roost and make their home.
Pest birds provide a difficult challenge in the protection of equipment and machinery. Birds bring with them the potential to cause serious damage to equipment from their droppings. Bird droppings are corrosive and eat away at paint, concrete and metal, and can eventually cause failure to structures or machinery.
For the new development at the Yard, it was essential to protect the new property, equipment, and products.
The team at Burnaby Yard works tried to come up with some solutions themselves, but because of the complex plumbing and electrical systems present at the facility, they opted to seek expert advice.
Solution
The Westside Bird Control team carefully inspected the facility and after thorough planning designed a solution using Bird Netting, Custom Zippers, along with a grid of Support Cables.
Our technicians firstly work to design the netting installation that fits with complex ceiling infrastructure, with careful attention paid to allow access to plumbing, electrical and other mechanical systems. Following that our technicians installed a tight grid of support cables for the bird net.
Lastly the netting gets hoisted up, positioned and affixed to guide cables at 3/4” intervals. Affixing the netting requires a particular attention to fully seal the areas around pipes and other infrastructure. This installation included custom marine grade Zipper stitched into bird net to allow lift ladder access to electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
An additional benefit here was that all Westside Pest Control bird net products are guaranteed for 10 years, helping to provide peace of mind to the customer.
