BC Hydro Bird Netting Installation

Westside Pest Control recently completed three large bird netting installs at BC Hydro Surrey and Burnaby facilitates.

Our bird control team was hired by PCL Constructors on behalf of BC Hydro to complete the installation of Seagull and Pigeon prevention at two (2) BC Hydro facilitates in Surrey and Burnaby.

The projects were executed during the initial stages of the COVID-19 Pandemic requiring additional personnel and site access management and health and safety precautions to ensure zero additional risk to the existing employees working at the sites. Westside Pest Control worked with the client to develop and implement a detailed planning allowing work to continue.

Background and Challenge

BC Hydro operates two fleet service facilities in Burnaby and Surrey. Technicians at each facility prep, paint and refinish vehicles in BC Hydro’s fleet. It’s a diverse fleet of 3,300 vehicles ranging from passenger vehicles to pick-up trucks, vans and heavy vehicles such as man lifts, digger derricks, crane trucks and trailers.

For BC Hydro, protecting equipment and machinery from damage caused by birds is critical for smooth running of operations at each facility. Having invested millions in new technologies and machinery, it was important to put in measures to protect their investment.

Bird Removal Project - Westside Pest Control

Solution

The solution for the BC Hydro warehouses was to install large custom-fitted Bird Netting with Bird Slides to block off the open access to the warehouse.

The scope of the project included:

The complete removal of all nesting debris including the cleanup of droppings and the sanitization of all surfaces.
The installation of 560 linear feet of custom cut “bird slope” on I-Beam ledges to prevent roosting.
The installation of over 1000 square feet of bird netting with customized hardware and fasteners enabling the bird netting to be installed around existing canopies and exhaust stacks.
The installation of a unique Westside Pest Control designed, customized structural framework that allowed the installation of a movable “bird netting curtain” facilitating access behind the curtain as required by the BC Hydro personnel.

Result = protection of fleet equipment and massively reduced cost in cleanup and equipment maintenance

Burnaby Works Yard – Bird Control Project

Large Bird Netting Installation

Westside Pest Control recently installed over 14,000 square feet of bird netting for the new Burnaby Works Yard to help protect machinery and product from bird damage. Our technicians firstly work to design the netting installation that fits with complex ceiling infrastructure, with careful attention paid to allow access to plumbing, electrical and other mechanical systems. Following that our technicians install a tight grid of support cables for the bird net. Lastly the netting gets hoisted up, positioned and affixed to guide cables at 3/4” intervals. Affixing the netting requires a particular attention to fully seal the areas around pipes and other infrastructure.

This installation included custom marine grade Zipper stitched into bird net to allow lift ladder access to electrical, plumbing and HVAC. Westside Pest Control bird net products are guaranteed for 10 years.
