Here in Metro Vancouver, rats are more than just an occasional nuisance, they’re a constant pressure. Our mild climate means rodent season never really ends. And when sightings start outside, it’s only a matter of time before they try moving inside.

Traps are one of the best front-line tools to knock back a rodent population fast, but only when used properly. Here’s what you need to know about Rodent Traps.

Rats in the Garden? That’s Your First Warning Sign

Let’s be clear: if you’re seeing rats outside, you’ve already got a problem.

Whether they’re darting through the hedges, under your deck, or sniffing around the compost, they’re not just “passing through.” Summer is peak rat movement season. They’re out looking for food (birdseed, fruit, garbage) and new places to nest. If you’ve got fruit trees, overflowing bins, or even a cozy BBQ that hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you’ve got an open invitation.

And no — it’s not always your fault. Maybe it’s a neighbour’s property that’s a bit unkempt. Rats don’t care whose yard it is, only that it offers cover, food, or shelter. But if you don’t act quickly, they’ll shift from the shrubs to the attic — fast.

Let’s Talk Traps — What Works and What Doesn’t

Now, on to the core of it. Trapping rats works. It’s fast, safe for pets (when done properly), and avoids the risks of using poisons that can harm wildlife or leave dead rats rotting in your wall voids.

Here’s what we use at Westside Pest Control — and why:

Snap Traps

The classic wooden trap still does the job. But skip the cheap ones — you want strong springs, reliable triggers, and precise placement. Good for indoor and protected outdoor areas (when boxed).

Electronic Traps

Great for indoor use — they deliver a high-voltage zap for a clean kill. Easy to clean, reusable, and safe around kids and pets when elevated.

Bait Stations with Traps Inside

These are your outdoor MVPs. They protect the trap from rain, raccoons, dogs, cats — and curious kids. Rats love the tunnel-like feel and are more likely to enter.

⚠️ We do NOT recommend glue traps or DIY poison unless you’re working with a professional setup. They often do more harm than good.

Bait Smarter, Not Harder

Peanut butter is the go-to bait for a reason — sticky, aromatic, and hard for rats to snatch without triggering the trap. But when that doesn’t cut it, rotate in: Nutella, Dried fruit, Bacon

Keep the bait small and tuck it deep behind the trigger. You want them reaching, not just grabbing and going.

Trap Placement: It’s All About the Runways

Rats don’t run through the middle of a room or lawn. They stick to the shadows. Walls, fence lines, under decks, behind appliances — these are their highways.

Place traps:

• Flush against walls (bait side to wall)
• Behind the fridge, stove, washer/dryer
• In crawlspaces or along basement walls
• Under sheds or decks (boxed for safety)

Start with at least 6–12 traps depending on the activity level. Scatter them across different hotspots. More traps = more data = faster resolution.

Rats Are Smart – Can you outsmart them?

Rats have neophobia: fear of new objects. That trap you just set? They might avoid it for days.

That’s why we “pre-bait.” Leave traps unset but baited for 1–2 nights. Let them feed safely, get comfortable — then arm the trap. It’s sneaky, but it works.

Also: don’t mix trap types in one zone. Pick your method, monitor results, and rotate only if needed.

Why Traps Alone Aren’t Enough

You trap one or two rats and think, “Got ‘em.” Not so fast. If you don’t tackle the root cause — access and attractants — you’ll be at it forever.

Here’s what we tell every client:

Seal the Entry Points

Rats don’t just walk in through the front door. Gaps in siding, crawlspace vents, soffits, rooflines, under decks — they find a way. We often find over 30 potential points on a single home.

Our techs use wire mesh, caulking, flashing, and even trenching techniques to stop them cold.

Remove the Buffet

That means:

• Locking down garbage and compost
• Cleaning your BBQ
• Securing pet food and birdseed
• Cleaning up fruit drops under trees

If rats get used to feeding in your yard, they’ll keep coming back.

What About Rats Living Under the Shed or Deck?

That’s prime real estate for rodents. If your deck or shed has easy access, it’s like a little rat resort.

Trapping works here — just make sure it’s in a tamper-proof box or hidden away. Once you’ve caught them, we recommend trenching: dig down 12–18 inches and install hardware cloth to block future digging.

Poison? Not So Fast…

Rodenticides might seem like a shortcut — but they’re risky. Dead rats in walls. Secondary poisoning of owls, hawks, or even pets. Several Metro Vancouver cities have banned their use for a reason.
